Now let’s meet the groups in more detail â¦â¦â¦â¦
Legendary psychobilly King Kurt move towards the sea with their particular madness. Formed in 1981 as Rockin ‘Kurt and his Sauer Krauts, the band changed their name a year later with the arrival of new vocalist Gary “The Smeg” Clayton to the now infamous King Kurt.
Signing with Stiff in 1983, it wasn’t long before the band found themselves on Top of the Pops and with a hit single on their hands.
The band originally broke up in 1988, but public demand made them come back for more to deliver more of their craziness since 2012. A band if you’ve seen it before you’ll want to see it again and if you haven’t. don’t feel good, now is your chance.
The Brighton & Hove News music team were fortunate enough to see King Kurt in concert in November 2018. Read our account of the evening HERE.

Polecats formed in 1977. The original lineup was Tim Worman (aka Tim Polecat, singer), Martin “Boz” Boorer, (guitarist and vocalist), Phil Bloomberg (bassist) and Chris Hawkes (drummer), who originally performed under the name “Cult heroes”. Finding difficulty in persuading the promoters to book them on the rockabilly circuit with a name sounding “too punk”, they adopted the band name suggested by Hawkes, The Polecats. Hawkes was then replaced by Neil Rooney.
The group first signed with the new British rockabilly label Nervous Records, and recorded their first single. ‘Rockabilly Guy’ at Lane Studios by guitarist Alan Warner in 1979. Formerly with the hit group “Foundations”, Warner toured and recorded with the Polecats for about a year.
In 1980, the band signed to Mercury Records and released their most successful LP, ‘The polecats are go!’. They had success in the UK charts with a cover of David Bowie “John, I’m just dancing”, a redesign of ‘Rockabilly Guy’, and another cover of the song by T-Rex (Marc Bolan) ‘Jeepster’. In 1983, they hit the charts in the United States with their song ‘Take a tour with me’. Soon after, John Buck replaced Neil Rooney on drums.
Boz Boorer left the band to work as a guitarist, music director and co-songwriter with Morrissey, but led a Polecats reunion in 1989, which produced a live album and a new studio. Raucous Records has released a compilation album of Boz Boorer’s work titled ‘Between the polecats‘in early 2001.
Tim Polecat moved to Los Angeles, California, and formed 13 Cats with drummer Slim Jim of the Stray Cats, bassist Smutty Smith of the Rockats and guitarist Danny B. Harvey of the Swing Cats. Their album ’13 cats’ is available on Cleopatra Records. Tim Polecat also works as an artistic director and successful production designer for films, commercials and music videos. Musically, Tim Polecat also continues to work as a film composer and solo singer-songwriter and is currently touring the United States with Slim Jim Phantom as “The Whammy !!”
Phil Polecat continues to perform with The Polecats, Katy Prado & The Mamboleros, Trio Farouche and as a session musician.
In November 2006 frontman Jarvis Cocker of UK band Pulp, along with bassist Steve Mackey released a 2 CD compilation album, ‘The trip’, which offers a wide selection of songs from artists as varied as The Fall, Gene Pitney, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, Dion, Sonny Bono as well as The Polecats with their hit “John, I’m Only Dancing”.
In June 2008, the Disney Pixar film WALL E used the hit song The Polecats 1983, ‘Take a tour with me’ in their TV trailers for the film.

british threesome Tall Texans make an exuberant mix of psychobilly, rockabilly and eclectic punk. Formed in Brighton in 1985, the trio originally included bassist / vocalist Mark Carew, guitarist Mark “Boggles” Denman and drummer Anthony Theodotou.
The group first built up a following by performing energetic concerts at Brighton’s rockabilly venue, The Klub Foot. Prior to their album, they also recorded two songs, ‘900 miles’ and ‘Once again’, for a local compilation, “Sounds of the Southern Stage”. In 1987, they released their first full album, ‘Sodbusters’, on Razor Records. It was broadcast on Radio 1 and helped strengthen their profile as they branched out into tours in Europe. Several other well-received albums followed, including 1989 “Five beans in the wheel” and ‘Saturnalia’.
In 1991 they released ‘Sing to the moon’, a stylistically varied album with forays into blues and reggae. By the mid-1990s, Denman had left the group as a touring member; although he would continue to contribute songs to the outfit. The replacement was guitarist Garry Castleman and saxophonist Paul Mumford, both of whom appeared in the 1994s. ‘Ace and Eight’.
Although the group’s recorded production slowed down over the next decade, they toured regularly. Mumford eventually split from the group and in 2005 the group returned with Adventures of the Long Tall Texans. Castleman then ceded his post to guitarist Matt Windler and in 2014 the band delivered their seventh studio album, “The devil made us do it.”
