EAGLES OF DEATH METAL + BONES UK – CHALK, BRIGHTON 11/22/21
Over the years I have had the privilege of seeing Death Metal Eagles at some of the best major festivals the UK and America have to offer, but tonight it’s a much more intimate setting at Brighton’s CHALK, making the 24th anniversary tour the first of this 12 date tour a little more special.
Unsurprisingly, after the Bataclan atrocity of November 13, 2015 in Paris, entry this evening requires a search of bags and metal detectors … with queues reflecting high season at Heathrow airport. However, there is not a single complaint as the crowd patiently queues, eagerly awaiting their turn.
The opening tonight is Bones United Kingdom (styled like BONES UK) – a little later than expected as roadies and sound technicians rush to the stage to check everything is in top working order for the upcoming show – but it’s well worth it ‘wait.
Bones UK, now based in Los Angeles, is originally from Camden Town and only returned to his old land yesterday – on horseback, they tell us about jet lag and tequila. This obviously works for them because they put in about half an hour of pure genius.
Bones UK cannot be categorized into a specific genre and instead offers a unique and heady fusion of gritty vocals, classic blues, thundering guitar and industrial punk rock.
Dressed in a jumpsuit and both connecting with the audience, Rosie Bones attracts attention.
David Bowie’s cover ‘I’m afraid of the Americans’ has a cool industrial vibe and an earthy voice, while “Beauty is boring” is a sultry and sensual critique of the media pressure to be beautiful – “Scars don’t make us imperfect, they make us beautiful”.
Rosie Bones talks about a man in Camden who criticized them for saying that girls can’t play guitar as well as boys – well, if tonight is anything to do he sure was wrong, and he hopes he’s still ruminating on his mistake. in London.
“Nice waste”, which Bones UK received its premiere for, and I’m sure one of the many Grammy nominations, wraps up the set tonight.
Bones UK are:
Rosie Bones – Lead vocals and rhythm guitar
Carmen Vandenberg – solo guitar
Heavy – Drums
Bones UK setlist:
“I’m afraid of the Americans”
“Beauty is boring”
“Girls don’t know how to play the guitar”
Death Metal Eagles go on stage to ‘We are a family’ with frontman Jesse Hughes decked out as a fully capped crusader.
The hall is sunken to the rafters – the audience reached total hysteria and a mosh pit began before a single note was played. As the group embarks on ‘Shasta Beast’, the mosh pit erupts creating a ripple effect with all the audience singing and dancing together.
EODM is the epitome and celebration of all things American rock and tonight we’re seeing them at their best.
The tunes are fast and furious as we are treated to crowd pleasers the whole way. ‘Cherry Cola’ keeps the sing-a-long at full flow and “Bad news for the boys” with his psychobilly beats bulldozer even has a few swinging and stomping security guards.
So often you look around at a concert and it’s an absolute sea of cellphones with the audience live streaming the performance or worse, posting selfies, tonight is not one of those nights, with emphasis on action on stage. EODM is about the sheer joy of live music, forgetting the outside world and being totally immersed in the moment. They understand that their biggest asset is their fans, oh, and a lot of talent and direction is added to the mix. Tonight is about having fun… and God knows we all need it in our lives right now.
Absolutely perfect and stellar first night of the tour.
