Editor’s Notes: Toby Feltwell and Sk8thing’s Cav Empt collective has turned in on itself since its heyday half a decade ago, but that doesn’t mean it’s done doing things. Instead, the Japanese brand caters to a fan base audience who receive the brand’s wearable social comments.
In fact, CE is so comfortably in its zone that the brand has developed its very first in-house sneaker. The aptly named “CAV SHOES” (all caps, please) have the energy of the bowling shoe in all the right ways.
Low profile and premium muffler, the CAV SHOES shoes feature breathable eVent-lined leather and mesh in black or beige over a grippy Vibram sole, with an embroidered Ziggurat symbol on the back for serve as the only branding element.
It is a perfect representation of the current situation of Cav Empt: indifferent to trends, the Japanese brand is free to experiment with its own voice.
Cav Empt’s first shoe was actually an obscure Vans model, the Bearcat, released in 2016.
In early 2019, CE released a collaborative Nike Air Max 95, complete with a matching tracksuit. In fact, this may have been his last big launch before it got a little more introspective.
Since then, CE has tightened the number of stores it sells in while continuing to offer both graphic and technical overlay pieces, typically made in Japan and often dynamically tinted.
There are a few national collaborations and timely drops, but, especially since Cav Empt is best known overseas for its unrestricted brand, this moderate second life must be a refreshing change of pace for Cav Empt and his collaborators. .
It’s always better to create at your own pace. Perhaps this is why it has taken Cav Empt so long to enter the realm of original shoe design.
