Chicago in tune (August 19 – September 19) is a new city-wide festival celebrating music in the tone of Chicago – in Chicago’s music year 2021. This Music Month will bring together iconic neighborhood venues, showcasing organizations and musicians from across the city to celebrate all genres and forms of music – with events big and small, free and paid at clubs, concert halls and beyond. For this piece, we’re focusing on a few events that shine a light on cumbia music.
From Colombia to Peru, Argentina to Mexico and beyond, cumbia music continues to have a hold on any dance floor as soon as the ch’ch’ch begins to ring. If you are looking to immerse yourself in a cumbia experience, the following events center around cumbia, one taking things on the dark side for gothic sensations.
Thursday August 19, 2021 at Fitzgerald
Psychedelic Cumbia & Chicha by the Chicago band Chicha Roots. The patio opens at 5 p.m.
Saturday 28 August 2021 at the Simone bar
(960 W. 18th Street) is the Kumbiaholics night hosted by the Kombi team. Two rooms presenting all styles of cumbia with DJs Angelfuk, Xces, Quality, Pablo Serrano and Gonzo. 9 p.m. – 3 a.m.
Friday August 27 underground (down)
For another flavor, DJ Flores Negras (lead singer of the doom-metal band Rosaries) and DJ MaddJazz organize a goth cumbia party at Subterranean (Fri 8/27).
Wednesday September 8 at Davis Square Park
Davis Square Park, 4430 S. Marshfield Ave., presented with Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (Cumbia) – with music by Quinto Imperio, dance lessons by Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council Ballet Folklorico and a variety of activities on site, including artistic creation and portrait drawing with Fernando Ramirez
