Deftones’s Chino Moreno reacts to Stephen Carpenter’s theories

At the end of last year, Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter made headlines, sharing his belief in a “flat earth” and questioning the effectiveness of vaccines during an appearance on the podcast Tin Foil Hat With Sam Tripoli. Carpenter then said his opinions were not intended to âupset or offend in any way,â but the comment definitely elicited a lot of backlash. Now, while appearing on The Peer Pleasure Podcast with host Dewey Halpus (as heard below), Carpenter’s bandmate Chino Moreno has shared his thoughts on his bandmate’s comments.
Moreno reiterated that he didn’t feel Carpenter shared his point of view coming from a negative place, but admits it was a little odd at first to see the guitarist’s theories making headlines.
âI’m surprised he’s not more of a meme⦠I think there may be a couple,â Moreno said (as transcribed by ThePrp.com) But, actually, it’s been hard for a minute, because I’ve obviously been friends with him since I was 10. And you know it hasn’t always been like that. “
“I’ll say the weed probably has a little bit to do with his conspiracies and this and that and whatever, because he, you know⦠And then probably sitting at home, just looking at the sites he’s looking at. . [It] probably doesn’t help being smoky and all that and all that, âhe continued.
Moreno explained, âIt’s weird though, when we’re together it’s like we don’t even talk about all of this. We play music, we laugh, we have fun playing music. [Weâre] still friends like we were when we were kids. But it’s not like I’ve never heard him tangent before and it’s just like I listen for two minutes and then I can’t anymore, you know what I mean? Because he will go to no man’s land. “
The singer says that while he wants to support Carpenter and thinks everyone should have their own opinion on certain things, he has his own beliefs about Carpenter’s theories. âI think it’s a little weird, some of his views on the world, the planet itself⦠But I mean, you know I fucking love him, man,â the singer said. “He’s really, really sincere⦠And he’s smart, which is crazy, he’s very affectionate. He’s probably one of the most generous people I’ve ever known in my life.”
Moreno also opened up about the backlash the guitarist faced after his theories hit the headlines. âYou can have your opinion, but you have to know the consequence once you have expressed it. And the consequence will probably be that a lot of people will say shit, âthe singer says. “Sometimes it’s like you keep it to yourself, you can believe in anything, I say for its sake.” I’m not saying he has to keep it to himself because we don’t want to hear it. I’m just saying if you don’t want to be made a fool of yourself sometimes don’t say some weird bullshit. “
“But I will say that I also don’t think everything he says comes from a negative place. Because he is really worried about the company,” concludes Moreno.
During the high-profile discussion, Moreno also spoke about Carpenter and a band assistant being at the Eagles of Death Metal show The Bataclan but leaving shortly before the terror attack, the status of the long shelf. Eros album and more. Check out the interview below.
