New Wave Theater aired locally in the Los Angeles area in the early 1980s as part of the Late Night Variety Show Night flight. Peter Ivers host New Wave Theater, David Jove produced, created and co-wrote the program with Billboard editor-in-chief of Ed Ochs magazine. New Wave Theater distinguished himself by featuring booming punk and new wave groups such as X, Bad Religion, Fear, The Dead Kennedys, 45 Grave, The Angry Samoans and The Circle Jerks.
The show began with a montage of punk and new wave action clips as the title and theme song appeared, an abrupt mix of Fear’s “Camarillo” and the Blasters’ “American Music”. Ivers appeared at the start and end of every show wearing dark glasses, pouring a flood of consciousness into life, art, and music.
New Wave Theater abruptly ended in 1983 when Ivers was tragically found pummeled to death in his Los Angeles apartment. To date, no one has been able to track down the killer responsible for his death.
I would have liked to be in the 80s to feel the excitement of this cutting edge late night show, but I have fun watching the episodes that were uploaded to Archive.org. I can’t think of anything on TV today that compares to the freshness of the New Wave Theater on any level.
