You know Jean Melky by her last name (she is Wyclef Jean’s younger sister), or by her extensive writing credits (she wrote for Sinead O ‘Connor and Regina Belle). She is also a singer, director and humanitarian with a unique sense of style that personifies her craft.
Melky recently published “Lose Ur Self” and appeared on Revolt Black News “Enduring The Race” – a conversation about the plight of Haitian migrants. We caught up with the talented Grammy Award-winning songwriter, who introduced us to her new music and style.
Inspiration for the music / cover to come …
The illustration for the single was done by a famous Haitian-American graffiti artist named Uncutt. It is a portrait that was presented to me during a gala of the Carma Foundation. The portrait was the start of a series of people who do not see themselves as the artist sees them. He revealed his piece to me and called her “Goddess”. When someone tried to buy it for $ 50,000, I refused to sell it and it is currently hanging in my house today. When I needed a visual to convey the idea of “Lose Yourself”, the Uncutt portrait was perfect.
How would you describe your style?
My fashion style can be described in three words: Bold, Daring and Sexy. I love the bright colors, the different patterns, and mixing things up that you wouldn’t think would work. I believe it’s not WHAT you wear, it’s HOW you wear it. My Gemini zodiac sign contributes to my eclectic style.

How does your style influence your art?
I don’t like to be put in a box. As an artist and as a fashionista, I like to defy the rules and refuse to be limited by the expectations of society. If I want to wear white after Labor Day, then I will and make it chic.
I draw a lot of influence for my personal style from the disco era of the 1970s and the punk rock movement of the 1980s.
