Gulou de Dada Beijing digs amid impending closure, resettlement plans underway

Over the past week, Dada Beijing hinted that they would be relocating in the near future. According to a Publish from the club’s official WeChat account last Tuesday, “Yes, Dada Beijing will probably have to move to another location at some point, but we don’t know when – next week, next month, next year – we don’t know. . ” Likewise, although he hasn’t landed on their WeChat account yet, impresario Michael Dada recently shared a poster on his personal WeChat account for a âOne Last Dada Beijing Bang-Upâ next Friday, May 28. this is all a bit vague and, given that Dada has been nothing short of an institution for almost a decade now, we thought it was premonitory to get to the bottom of it.
Fortunately, Michael was kind enough to give us a few more details, although they are still vague. To be fair, however, Beijing business owners – especially those operating in the nightlife industry – tend to exist in a perpetual state of vagueness.
Anyway, as Michael explains, âWe don’t know when we’re going to close at 206 Gulou, but it will probably happen soon,â adding, âThe earliest date we have received is June 1. , but we could be there in August, not totally sure yet. Despite the possibility of still being there in August, he estimated the probability of closing the Gulou site at around 90% next month. All of this is understandably frustrating as it doesn’t want to throw a definitive departure party, but stays open for a month or two more. Likewise, he doesn’t want to be kicked out with little or no warning, and therefore no opportunity to get a good start. âSo I’m not going to a 100% closing party, but there’s a very good chance that I will, so we’re sort of trying to pass it off as a possible closing party,â says Michael.
For what it’s worth, unlike some places that have closed in the past year, such as DDC and Temple, Dada already has a contingency plan in place, with a new location that has been secured and is currently under construction. . At this time, Michael does not want to reveal where this location is as there are “a few details to work out before we make it public”, but rest assured that he will be ready to go when Gulou leaves it. .
Therefore! That’s the long and the short of it, folks. Bottom line, you might only have two more weekends to get to Dada’s iconic location in Gulou, so you better make the most of it. Aside from the party scheduled for next weekend (stay tuned for more details), this Saturday, May 22, the club will host the mainstays of Beijing’s dark waves scene, Quite cold, who have been spinning their signature mix of cold wave, post-punk, new wave and EBM at Dada since 2016.
As this week’s WeChat announcement so succinctly puts it, “We are now telling you that 206 Gulou will not last forever, and we urge you to come and visit Dada as soon as possible and often before we have to close at this location.” We’ve been here nine years, and this magical place will be missed by all of us – so let’s enjoy it while it’s still here! “
