IDLES Break the monotony in ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ video

Over the weekend, IDLES performed on one of Lollapalooza’s main stages, performing a typically roaring set. Today, the British post-punk band shared a new video for ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. It features homemade masks, dancers, and references to Gus Van Sant’s polarizing 2003 film. Gerry.
“Stockholm Syndrome” begins with a reverb-heavy bassline before descending into surf-rock style hardcore madness. Over propelling instrumentals, lead singer Joe Talbot roars deeply abstract lyrics about power and morality.
The video for “Stockholm Syndrome” matches the ambiguity of meaning behind these lyrics.
“The original idea for the video was to try to visualize the monotonous hell of having to work to survive and how the ‘machine’ eventually swallows you up and strips you of your freedoms,” said director Charlotte Gosch and guitarist of IDLES Lee Kiernan in a statement. . “But we wanted to achieve this in a metaphorical way that keeps the meaning as open as possible. So it becomes more of a visual representation that can be read in different ways.
The song is out of Crawler, released last November. The album was produced by Mark Bowen and the band’s Kenny Beats.
IDLES will kick off their North American tour on August 27 in Pasadena with a concert at This Ain’t No Picnic Festival. The Quick Run wraps up September 17 with a show at Roadrunner in Boston.
