I’m a girl who first tried the “grungy” Spiders nightclub in Hull – Lucy Marshall
Everyone kept saying how good Spiders is – and after 19 months of shutting down, I couldn’t wait to try it for myself.
Having never been to the legendary club, I was eager to finally enter the iconic Cleveland Street venue when it reopened last weekend.

I had heard that it was quite “grungy” and the land of dreams for punk rock, heavy metal, indie folk who drink Monster daily and breathe a lot of cool.
I was a bit scared. I am a girl girl. I love dressing in a new dress, false eyelashes and my most dangerous six inch heels and sipping prosecco with a raspberry filling.
So you could say on paper that I’m not your typical Spiders client, like my friend said, “Luce, whatever you do, please don’t wear heels at this club.”
I went back to my college days and pulled out a cropped top and flare pants with sneakers – while my top was crushed velor, I certainly played my outfits over the top on this occasion.
Of course, I still had a few looks as if to say, “You don’t belong here my love.”
There was quite a queue to get into this place, so you can imagine that after all the talking and standing in the cold, shivering as I drink my last sips from a can of cold beer before I go. come in, expectations were high.
Walking in definitely made me feel like I was heading to a Halloween party. And sure enough, since it was the weekend before Scary Sunday, the dark corners and hanging spiders encompassed that scary feeling.
There were so many floors in this place, I couldn’t believe how big it was. There is definitely variety in there and if you are a smoker (not like me) the outside space is huge.
At this point I actually thought the place was okay, but when I stood on the dance floor I kept saying “Can you hear the music because I can’t”. It literally sounded like someone had pulled out their favorite indie playlist on Spotify and held it up.
It was a little awkward because it was like where’s the music? Frustrated by the music and stayed at the bar for god knows how long, suddenly everything changed. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
A radiant sign that forever changed my nightclub desires. The sign read “TWO GRILLED CRUMPES £ 1.00”.
I mean, crumpets in the club. Oh wow. I thought to myself ‘why has nobody thought of this before?’.
The best part is that crumpets are so easy to make that they don’t take long to rise and froth in butter. Second £ 1 for a snack – a real bargain. And thirdly, it’s so British it made me smile.
The juxtaposition between heavy metal sounding like it’s coming out of an iPhone, and having crumpets served in the club – insanity.
One thing that was quite rancid were the bathrooms.
While I wouldn’t expect a nightclub bathroom to exude luxury, this bathroom screamed HMP. Honestly, I felt like I was being punished by going to the bathroom, but unfortunately we all know that when nature calls, there is frankly no other option.
Escaping from the bathroom after singing “happy birthday” about three times while washing my hands, I finally managed to get a drink between the pile of sweaty men in a group of my friends t-shirts.
I traveled to the next floor which was a bit of old school, mo-town style music.
So even though screaming heavy metal or indie music doesn’t get me on the dance floor like Biggie Smalls or Kayne West, luckily there was one track I liked, so obviously I stayed there. .
While this might not be my number one nightclub pick, I would give Spiders a second chance.
Would I recommend it to those who hate indie or heavy metal music? No.
But, if you have friends who want to go there or want to try it out for yourself, there are other areas of the club where you can enjoy great music, drinks and of course the iconic crumpets.
