Interview with Montreal rapper Prblmchild
[ad_1]
Some time ago I discovered the music of an underground rapper from Montreal named Prblmchild through mutual connection. At first I won’t lie – I expected him to sound like any other soundcloud rapper. After listening to his music, I found the lyricism and the quality of the production to be really strong. It is for this reason that I was so grateful to have the opportunity to interview her for this month’s issue. Without further ado, here is the interview:
M: Okay, first of all, can you describe who you are? Where do you come from, what do you do, that sort of thing.
PC: My name is Wolf and I am also called Problem Child. I am a professional tattoo artist and street artist from Montreal. [I] grew up in Montreal North to be more precise.
M: Canada really produces the best talent eh⦠You are without a doubt a very versatile rapper. On songs like âWinnerâ you have more of a trap sound and on âMisunderstoodâ you are able to sound like a 90s rapper. Is that on purpose?
PC: Thanks for noticing! Yes, I’m doing it on purpose. I started making music with this specific intention to show my versatility! I grew up listening to different types of music, from punk to pop to techno, and of course rap!
M: Speaking of versatility, what are your rap inspirations, if any? Who influenced your unique sound?
PC: A lot of people inspire me. Tory Lanez [is] best known for its versatility as well. Russ, Hopsin, J Cole, Tyler the Creator, Joey Bada $$, [etc]. There are many more but these are the main ones that I was inspired by!
M: I can definitely hear those influences in your songs! Because of all these different styles, most of your songs sound pretty unique. Do you like one of your songs more than the others? If yes, why?
PC: My favorite song right now is âMisunderstoodâ. As much as I like doing wavy trap, new wave, I will always come back to my roots of lyricism. In addition, I touched on more personal topics and spoke a little more about my scars. [in that track].
M: Honestly, it’s also my favorite track! Your production value is a real strength compared to most underground rappers. Do you / did you have a record company? Who directs / produces your music videos?
PC: Thanks! I make all my videos. I suggest the concepts, scripts, location, etc. Artistically, I like to be involved as much as possible in all aspects of my music.
M: Very impressive. On Instagram, I see that you also do tattoos and frescoes. These art forms are strongly linked to the hip-hop community. Has your art helped you with relationships with rap?
PC: Yeah, let’s face it, everyone loves tattoos, especially rappers, right? I tattooed [for] almost 10 years now and I basically make a living from my career! And as you say, it goes hand in hand. Quite often you will be at an arts event and it turns out that a DJ, producer or the next up-and-coming artist [will] Be there! The arts scene in Montreal is very real. It’s so underrated, but I think people are slowly catching up with the talent we have here!
M: Yeah, I think outside of the big places like LA, NYC, or Toronto, art is underrated in most places. Anyway, to conclude, do you have any plans for new music in the future?
PC: Yes, I am currently working on my first album. [Iâm] put together features, write scripts for the visuals, plan the promo, all that good stuff! I plan to drop it this year! Covid has really given me time to think it over and come up with a game plan, so now it’s time for execution.
M: I’ll be sure to listen to that when it comes out! Finally, where can we find your work? Where can we listen to your music or watch your tattoos and murals?
PC: Shout out all the social media you want If you want to be up to date follow me on Instagram @ wolf.lartist, I post almost every day there! [You can] get my music on any streaming platform and YouTube (PRBLMCHILD Official) for visuals! ___________________________________
There are so many unsung talents in this world and I’m always happy to meet new underground artists. Anyway, I would suggest listening to Prblmchild. Specifically, I would suggest the songs Motion and Misunderstood. I listen to it on Spotify, but like he said it is on all streaming platforms and Youtube. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for this album!
