LA RATS – Nikki Sixx, Rob Zombie, John 5 and Tommy Clufetos team up for the film’s soundtrack –
When Scott Borchetta called his friend Nikki Sixx, he knew he needed something with speed, power, and speed. Responsible for directing the soundtrack of Liam Neeson’s upcoming Netflix thriller on June 25 The ice road, the founder of the visionary label wanted a rocking “ psycho-billy ” track to anchor an eclectic collection of songs sampling the array of American roots music. Speaking to the full-fledged bassist and songwriter about the dream collaboration between Sixx, Rob Zombie and Zombie guitarist John 5, possibly writing and producing a song for the film, Sixx asked Borchetta about him. send an example of the type of song he was considering for the soundtrack. Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” clapper was already being pointed out as a hope to be included in the film because it really synthesized everything he was talking about. Nikki listened to it and then sent it to Zombie. Both rockers felt Cash’s iconic track was the perfect song for them to record.
Sixx called Borchetta back and said: “Why don’t you just cut that off?
The guys were all in agreement on the song that names towns across the country – and Zombie had the vocal gnarl to bring that altered, long-haul tone to the song that spent 22 weeks at Hank Snow’s No. 1 in 1962. Opening with a disturbing audible cloud and industrial noise, an infernal train beat emerges from the heavy sound wave. Zombie’s voice slices through the ballast, bossy and rude. Commanding the ride that begins. “” I was packing my bag along the dusty road to Winnemucca, “his throaty delivery transforms Cash’s intensity with drummer Tommy Clufetos’ shattering attack.
Laughing, Sixx said of the LA Rats and their affinity for this song of rough journeys, “Isn’t that ironic? This song that’s so Rock & Roll is therefore Country, this is how all of it – it’s the traveling circus, from town to town, riff to riff, fat cheeseburger, rinse and repeat. It’s reality-based poetry – and it’s something each of us has experienced.
“We wanted to bring this fire, it’s Johnny Cash, but it’s also How? ‘Or’ What do we turn it over? So John 5 and I brought this Zeppeliny half-time thing from the start with Rob talking on the outro. But I also did stuff (which suggested the original) like these big walks through the upright playing style of guitar parts, which I don’t do at Mötley or Sixx: AM We all had that freedom to go somewhere else, and we did. “
Collaborating on the track, the union of Zombie, Sixx, Zombie guitarist John 5, who grew up on “Hee Haw” and Black Sabbath / Ted Nugent / Alice Cooper ringer Clufetos created a chemistry that was more than the sum of their parts. With a thrill of equal parts rebellion, aggression, fierce sense of music, and deep respect for the song, “I’ve Been Everywhere” epitomizes the intensity of The ice road and the performance of Neeson.
“We all grew up believing that large groups don’t play by the rules or obey the speed limit,” says Sixx. “When I called Rob he said, ‘I have always I loved Johnny Cash, and I’ve always loved this song. I think that’s what we all share: we all play live and know that there is this magic (which comes from that); there is the swagger that you can feel, that energy that you can feel. This song has all that, and that’s what we looked for.
“I’ve Been Everywhere” is available May 21 via Big Machine Records.
