Lady A’s “What a Song Can Do” offers something vintage

There is a vintage quality to Lady A’s new single “What a Song Can Do” that has the potential to recapture fans who have turned their attention elsewhere in recent years. It’s symbiotic.

Give thanks to Dann Huff for bringing a sense of peace to an arrangement which is really quite progressive with its mix of programming and pedal steel. It achieves a goal that decreases year by year.

Singers Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley join in, but don’t swap lead vocals as much as they do. This is an important distinction which is not always possible in the catalog of the trio. “I Run to You” and “American Honey” are examples where the two work together for a greater good. More recent radios from 747 and Heartbreak finding one or the other in control, to the point that it felt like competition.

Lyrically, “What a Song Can Do” requires a personal approach to be great. It’s not that crazy that a song can make someone dance and cry, but with the right pinch of regret or affection, those words lift off the page in the listener’s heart. The low-key team effort will make it a success for Lady A in 2022.

Did you know?: Ryan Hurd co-wrote the lyrics for “What a Song Can Do” with Lady A’s Charles Kelley, as well as Laura Veltz and Sam Ellis.

Lady A Lyrics for “What a Song Can Do”:

Makes you want to take a Sunday walk / Immediately sends you back to another time / Lights your lighter / Sings loud and out of tune / He puts a little sound in an empty space / And for a little while, lets you drift / It’s simple, but it’s true / Yeah, it’s crazy what a song can do.

Chorus:
It can make you dance and make you cry / Make you want to try more / Party up and kiss this girl / And break some rules / It will make you give your heart and get it back / Change your mind like this / When it’s like every line was written just for you / Ain’t it crazy what a song can do.

Makes you a call at 4am / Makes you say you want it again / It’s like you knew it from the start / Ain’t that crazy song.

Repeat the chorus

Whoa, crazy what a song can do.

Shake the ground, steal your breath / Feel that pounding in your chest / Get on your knees right there in that old pew / Ooh, get your heart given and get it back / Change your mind just like that / And most of all that’s what brought me here to you / Ain’t it crazy what a song (crazy what a song) Crazy what a song can do.
