N0V3L releases their new single “STRANGER”
N0V3L reveal a new single “FOREIGN” from their next first album NON-FICTION which will be released next Friday via Flemish eye. The song’s cryptic sax and piano chord hits as the bass accompaniment hums in the background, finally giving way to a dark and pulsating soukous rhythm. The guitars exchange lead shots like song Jon varley intones, “Feeling of looking at the world through the glass / Friendships like tokens, moments don’t last.”
NON-FICTION functions as a treatise on modern existence and the perverse parameters in which it is lived. It’s a collection of nimble and carefully constructed post-punk, new wave and funk that has been zapped and warped by an opioid overdose crisis, mental illness, populism and the ruthless march of time.
NON-FICTION was written between 2017 and 2020, and recorded on a Tascam-388 in the band’s demolished rental house. Bryce Cloghesy (Military Genius, Crack Cloud) produced and mixed the record, which exchanges their S / T The martial rigidity of EP for a broader approach to updating group tensions. The dismantling of Vancouver, which was previously the group’s headquarters for the production of music, videos and clothing, was slowly evacuated as the members moved before the inevitable; another victim of Vancouver’s cutthroat real estate market. The N0V3L, once a concentrated machine, is now widespread in the western province of British Columbia.
NON-FICTION is just that: a factual communiqué that interprets and translates our living conditions into sometimes spoken, sometimes sung, anti-capitalist couplets. The ‘UNTOUCHABLE’ opener buzzes with fluorescent bass and synth haze before tightly interwoven guitar lines raise the tension, with singer Jon Varley documenting the marginalization of mental illness by society. “FALLING IN LINE” jolts with sunny guitars before switching to halftime while the anesthetic sax shakes in the background: “Busy in line / Stuck waiting behind / Calming the mind / With another lie white, ”Varley moaned.
“PUSHERS” is a brutalist and hammering missive against Big Pharma’s construction of the opioid overdose crisis. A frenzied synth vibrates over anxious guitars as Varley, channeling his lived experience with opioid addiction while working in downtown Vancouver, cries: “They take a life by taking a loss / They drop the price.” while increasing the cost! ” Final track “FORECAST NOTICE” is a bitter, nostalgic submission to modernity, pitted with sorrow for a past forever gone and ambivalence for what awaits us as Varley drones, “Forced Adaptation, Foreclosure Notice / Dragging Us On, An Indifferent Future . “
The title NON-FICTION couldn’t be a clearer statement of intent. This is the real story of N0V3L. NON-FICTION sees its release at digital retailers on May 28 and will be in stores July 9 via Flemish Eye Records. Pre-order it here.
