Bruce Springsteen will be back on stage this week when his show, Springsteen on Broadway, begins its second broadcast on June 26 at Jujamcyn’s St. James Theater. Fortunately, if anything happens to The Boss, Nathan Lane will be backstage to replace him.
Lane joked about how he is Springsteen’s understudy during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
âI’m only one bad seafood dinner away from becoming the boss,â Lane said. “And when they first asked me, I thought, ‘No, that’s crazy. But then I thought, so many people say to me, ‘You and Bruce⦠it’s like you were separated at birth! You’re both Jersey boys, you’ve spent your life on stage, you’ve both this quality of man. Women want you, men want to be you! ‘â
So what’s the hardest part about being Springsteen’s understudy? According to Lane, it’s the wardrobe.
âThe hardest part is sneaking into those vests,â Lane said. âHe’s a 71-year-old man who dresses like a newsie!
