New York pot growers get green light to plant crops
New York is paving the way for hemp growers to get a head start on growing marijuana for legal sales slated to begin next year.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation on Tuesday, Feb. 22 that allows hemp growers to apply for two-year licenses to grow for the next legal recreational pot market. Permit holders can start planting this spring.
Hochul says the measure will jump-start the “safe, fair, and inclusive marijuana industry” the state is building.
It’s been nearly a year since New York legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults, but authorities are still working on regulating the legal cultivation and sale of cannabis.
If growers were to wait for regulators to finalize rules and taxation details, it would be too late to plant crops for the next growing season.
New York is expected to reap millions of dollars in revenue once sales are legal and regulated for adults seeking to use marijuana in non-medical applications.
