Pearl Jam discussed never playing again after Roskilde tragedy

Eddie Vedder has revealed that a member of Pearl Jam felt the group should never perform again after nine people were killed and 26 were injured in a crowd surge in Roskilde, Denmark.
The incident took place in June 2000 and left the group struggling to recover. In an excerpt from the original Audible track by Vedder i am mine (audio clip below) – recorded before the recent Astroworld tragedy – the frontman said he had “disappeared in Europe” as he faced his emotions.
“[I] I had my own way of getting by, taking Spanish guitar lessons with people who didn’t speak English, âhe recalls. âIt was just a way of focusing and being around people that most of me couldn’t understand. This way I was able to be around people, but since I didn’t really know what they were saying, it was very peaceful and calm.
He continued, âThere was at least one person in the band, I remember, who thought maybe we should never play again, and if that’s something the rest of us didn’t feel like? , it still wasn’t something that could be easily dismissed. . We all had to deal with something that we all experienced as individuals, but also with help from each other. “
They returned to the stage in August of the same year, having already committed to the show, although Vedder admitted it was a “tough decision to make.” He added: âOur nerves were pretty tight the night before. We had a brief balance and it was a little strange, looking at empty seats⦠it had a different meaning⦠There were so many emotions, I thought, âI can exploit this; I have to do something. I had a little tape recorder, and that’s when I recorded and understood the song âI Am Mineâ. It was about getting ready for that first show and hoping we would all be safe the next night.
