Piroshka, the group led by the former Lush singer / guitarist Miki Berenyi and featuring members of Modern English, Elastica and momentum, shared a new single from their upcoming album, Love flows and comes together, which releases July 23 via Bella Union. “VO” is a beautiful piece of breathtaking dreampop. It’s also a tribute to the end Vaughan Olivier, whose design work gave the 80s / 90s 4AD its distinctive look.
âI originally wrote this as an instrument, but the rest of the band convinced me to put a voice on it,â Miki says. âThe lyrics are snapshots of Vaughan Oliver’s funeral in January 2020 – lines of speeches, fleeting impressions of the day. I am coming to the age where the people I grew up with are dying and I find the funerals are a solace in sadness, formal yet emotional, a celebration of a life, a space for the living to reconnect.
The video for “VO”, meanwhile, features a mysterious being who visits a woman on a beach. âWe wanted to put that central frame of being threatening and allow the viewer to reflect on fear and loss while embracing hope and the future through their life experiences,â said director Connor Kinsey. “Not giving the subject any recognizable characteristics meant that his emotional journey through the different timelines was more accessible to a wider audience.”
