Motörhead occupies a rarefied air in the world of heavy music. Led by the inimitable Lemmy Kilmister, they emerged from the London heavy-psych and space-rock scene of the early 70s (embodied by Lem’s previous acid-soaked band Hawkwind) and quickly gained their legendary reputation. of road-driven, speed-fueled rock & roll. icons thanks to their tireless touring and god-level songs like “Ace of Spades”, “Overkill” and more.
Motörhead’s uncompromising outlaw spirit and punchy singular sound appealed to punks, NWOBHM fanatics, thrash kids and beyond – and many of those fans would go on to become rock stars themselves, including including the guys from Metallica, Max Cavalera, Lzzy Hale and Dave Grohl to name a few. For 40 years, from their formation in 1975 and their self-titled debut in 1977 to 2015’s swan song bad magicLemmy led his band through all types of ups and downs…but Motörhead never let go, until the day Lemmy passed away on December 28, 2015 (only weeks after performing his last gig).
Motörhead left the world with so many great songs that continue to inspire generations of heavy music fans, including modern psychobilly icon Reverend Horton Heat (aka Jim Heath). Below, the singer-guitarist sings along to his favorite Motörhead song.

“Ace of Spades”
I know real Motörhead aficionados will roll their eyes but my favorite Motörhead song is “Ace of Spades”. The importance of this song is huge. Even the first contemporaries, the great AC/DC, never had a cut rhythm and an excessive rocker like “Ace of Spades”. The song brings people together because it crosses so many genres. It can be metal, it can be bluegrass, it can be rockabilly and it’s definitely one of the main songs that connects metal to punk. He’s a timeless, high-energy genius.
