The city of Torremolinos is gearing up for one of its biggest cultural events of the year, the coveted Rockin Race Jamboree, to be held next month.
The music festival was canceled last year due to the pandemic and there were concerns about whether the 28th edition would take place this year, but organizers have announced that the festival will continue, although it will adhere to all current covid regulations at the time.
Capacity restrictions are one of the most likely measures, which is why advance reservations for the main concerts held in the municipal auditorium have been advised.
Organizers also intend to feature the highlight of the festival, an afternoon of live music and a parade of classic American cars on Playamar’s beachfront, but stressed that this will depend on any new restrictions imposed to combat against the latest virus wave.
The festival will begin with a launch party at the Barracuda Hotel in Torremolinos on Wednesday February 2 and will continue in the auditorium from Thursday February 3 to Saturday February 5 from 8 p.m.
Other daytime concerts are scheduled at the hotel, as well as in Plaza del Remo, but it is advisable to check the festival website for any changes.
The site also offers a comprehensive list of regulations put in place to ensure the protection of the public, musicians and staff. These will include wearing face masks and presenting a covid passport or negative PCR test to access the hotel and auditorium.
The four-day retro extravaganza is the largest American roots music festival in Europe. Nominated “Best Music Festival” by the Ameripolitan Music Awards in Memphis, the event features live performances from some of the genre’s most celebrated artists.
International musicians
The festival has grown over the years as it features musicians from all over Europe, the United States and Latin America.
Rock and roll fans travel from all over Europe and Spain to enjoy the gathering, many of whom dress up in classic 50s attire especially for the event.
This year’s lineup includes the Reverend Horton Heat, a Texas musician who has become known as the “godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly.” His band of the same name formed in 1986 and began playing swing, big band and rockabilly classics in Dallas clubs. Today, they have recorded 12 albums and achieved several hits on the US Billboard charts.
Also appearing are London rockers The Comet Combo, a six-piece band performing in the style of Bill Haley; Charlie Hightone and The Rock-It’s, Charlie is one of Spain’s finest rock and roll performers who has performed at some of the most prestigious festivals in the United States, Canada and Australia. and Roy Dee & the Spitfires, a four-piece rockabilly band from Portugal renowned for their high-energy showmanship and incredible musicianship.
Tickets for the main shows in the Auditorium and the Barracuda Hotel must be reserved in advance. Special packages are available: www.rockinrace.com
