ESG AT THE GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL, DECEMBER 9
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING turns out to be a house party like when a DJ – the one you hired strictly for their DJ gear – drops ESG’s âMy Love For Youâ. All of a sudden things get crazy. The party gets underway in this flashy, sexy and funky sliding door scenario. Waves of bodies contort and twist in motion. Even those who are not blessed with rhythm at birth somehow learn to hold a rhythm for three brief minutes. Time flies on when everyone is riding that high punk-funk touch, chaos occurs after 11am.
Once, at a house party, the one that took place in the apartment above Madrone, in fact (I think?) ESG came and all these people were running up the stairs just to shake it – some from Madrone, others just off the street. To crush. Bug le eff – I believe this house party got a noise complaint of the night club. This is the strength of ESG.
Formed in the South Bronx in 1978, ESG [Emerald, Sapphire & Gold] opened an unprecedented path as innovators and trendsetters in the scene already at the break-up of the borders of the early 80s in New York City. Through a series of incredible EPs and LPs, the women of the group have pushed the boundaries of sonic invention, pleasure and expectations. They have risen to the forefront of a post-punk and New Wave scene dominated by male artists.
ESG has been called “too ahead of its time” and the creator of “another world sound” by the New York Times. Their list of followers is very extensive, spanning the gamut of modern indie and dance music. Their songs have been sampled by hundreds of artists, including Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, NWA, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Liars, DJ Qbert, DJ Shadow, Girl Talk and Nine Inch Nails. They remain unique as they have also influenced the Bronx hip-hop scene and post-punk / indie.
Listen, they played the opening of the Hacienda and the closing of the Paradise Garage. Who else has this pair of facts in their biography? These are the bookend portals in the history of dance music. Vibe on it for a second. Unbelievable.
While the group has cut back on touring a bit, ESG will be performing a special show at the Great American Music Hall on December 9. This may be one of the last times they perform in San Francisco, and tickets will be sold.

NERVOUS FILES 30 YEARS (Nervous recordings)
Nervous Records founder Michael Weiss grew up with the music business in his house. Her father was a record distributor who also ran a disco label called Sam Records. (Anyone who has attended a Sweater Funk party or listened to a set of crate searches of Mamabear heard the iconic Sam Records hit “This rhythm is mineâBy Vicky D.) From these family beginnings, Weiss has created his own label which explores the dance music of his own generation, from hip hop to house, by artists such as Black Moon, Todd Terry, Armand van Helden and Masters At Work.
This month, Weiss’s Nervous Records are releasing two extensive compilations retracing the label’s first 30 years. The innovative New York label produced hits that sounded cars and boomboxes, spanning the gamut from hip hop, reggae and house to techno. He released groundbreaking tracks from Black Moon, Byron Stingily and Josh Wink. The label’s decidedly New York attitude, embodied by the cartoon that adorns its records, was celebrated with the 1993 Masters At Work hit, “The Nervous Track”.
âMy main focus for the label’s sound has been and will continue to revolve around signing good songs and music that has the ability to respond first at street level,â said label general manager Andrew. Salsano. âThe best results come from artists who first receive a little local love that turns into a global impact. “

MATT ROBIDOUX – AT DUSK (Cassettes and recordings already dead)
To dust, San Francisco-based musician Matt Robidoux’s new album is both eerie and uplifting. Like, on a weird baroque-pop type steeze. With field recordings, drum programming and a wide range of instruments (brass, woodwinds, violins, guitars, drums, plastic saxophone, banjo, gamelan instruments), Robidoux’s method is a prism of daring. moving and naked. Add in this video for âThe Bouquet,â and you have the deconstructed pop. It is a rich and lively text.
