Wacky’s ‘Masked Singer’ double elimination reveals British punk, pop royalty
It was a great pop / punk night on Masked singer Wednesday – when two celebrity cosplayers, Pepper and Jester, were unmasked in the Group A semi-finals and turned out to be British singer Natasha Bedingfield and, shockingly enough, John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten, respectively. Guest judge will.i.am was particularly shocked and impressed by this latest revelation, leaping from his seat to salute the Sex Pistols legend who had been aptly portrayed in a packet of clues as an “icon” who ” changed the course of history ”and is one of the“ 100 most influential people of all time ”.
” What is the What? Johnny fucking rotten? panted will.i.am. “You know, it’s very rare to meet people who have inspired generations, who have given people the freedom to express themselves and to rebel. You mean so much to the music business, and I just want to thank you for everything you’ve done for music.“
Lydon’s raging performance of The Soggy Bottom Boys’ “Man of Constant Sorrow” this week was without a doubt one of the craziest moments of Masked singer story – with the jester, looking like Pinch / TuckCarver’s villain on steroids and / or acid, screaming exaggeratedly Big laugh accent before succumbing to giggles halfway through, then flipping over to seemingly improvise a fairly empty Busby Berkeley / snow-angel routine that confusing judge Robin Thicke described as a “interpretive dance.” Host Nick Cannon was at a loss for words, muttering, “That was …Something. “It was kind of punk rock, actually. And it was total anarchy. God save the jester, indeed.
But as crazy and scary as the jester was, he had a serious reason to participate in this show – to impress and cheer his sick wife. “We’ve been married for 45 years, and – no sadness, you know – but she’s at a certain point in her life that she has Alzheimer’s disease. And it’s my job as the primary protector of the love of my life to take care of her. And she goes love this.”
The judges had speculated that the jester could be anyone from the Red Hot Chili Peppers chip to even Elon Musk, but luckily none of them were so convinced they had used the new gadget. of this season, the Take It Off Buzzer, in this case. This buzzer, which can only be used by the jury once per group, allows a judge – if he is 100% sure of a candidate’s identity – to guess instantly. If this judge is correct, the competitor must unmask himself and leave the competition immediately. But if the judge is wrong, humiliation and punishment will of course follow.
And wow, has this ever happened! Ken “I know exactly who it is” Jeong was actually so confident that Pepper was Sara Bareilles, after hearing her Wednesday performance of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” that he hit that wacky buzzer – to be even more embarrassed than he was on the night of his most famous failure, when he thought Wendy “The Lips” Williams was Mariah Carey. But on that double-elimination semi-final night, Ken and his more sane fellow panelists didn’t have to wait long to learn that the Pepper was in fact Bedingfield – which had been the assumption of Judge Nicole Scherzinger.
And then there were two: the Bull and the Skunk. They will face off against the finalists TBD from Group B, but before that, let’s check their performance and continue the guessing game.
The bull, “Rain on me”
Despite being one of Season 6’s greatest showmen, the Taurus has confessed that his confident stage act is, well, all bull. Apparently he’s been nervous and intimidated all season, especially by Skunk, whom he suspects to be one of his childhood vocal idols. (Spoiler alert: The Bull is right about Skunk. But I’ll get to that.) However, the Bull was his usual “real triple threat” during this week’s blazing Lady Gaga / Ariana Grande cover.
The clues: He used to be a solo artist (so he is nota star of a boy group), and this week’s word association index was “ring.” He also has some sort of connection with will.i.am. In the past, we’ve learned that before Taurus got famous, he quit his job to pursue his dreams in a faraway city, where he ended up living in a floating apartment. We were also warned by comedy / tragedy masks, an old-fashioned MacIntosh computer, a photo of room & Oates, “house parties”, Carnegie Hall, Broadway, Walt Disney Concert Hall, a “little town surrounded by cows”, and Forbes magazine.
The judges’ assumptions: Billy Porter, Usher, Jason Derulo, Ne-Yo.
My guess: I am deeply convinced that this is a Texan from a small town, a Disney addict, a dynamite dancer and ForbesTodrick Hall, winner of “30 Under 30”, who moved to Hollywood shortly before appearing in American Idol in 2010. (room! Do you understand?) Todrick starred in Broadway productions (Kinky Boots, Chicago), and his last concert was called the “Haus Party Tour”. Nicole is clearly playing the idiot, since she starred in her pal Todrick’s musical Straight out of Oz Not long ago.
The skunk, “Finally”
Intensifying this season’s friendly rivalry, the Skunk revealed that she thinks the Bull is her ‘to beat’, so she pulled out ‘the big guns’ with this Etta James classic. OK, now the bull should really be skerred from the Skunk. It was sublime! “We are not worthy! Nick exclaimed, as Robin hopped enthusiastically onto the judges’ desk.
The clues: She was told that Etta James approved of the idea of Skunk portraying her in a movie and having a “romantic bond” with Nicole. The biggest regret of her life was when she let her pride keep her from saying hello to a loved one when she still had the chance. Other clues included a pager from 1994 with the number “607” (code for “I miss you”), a glamorous lifestyle she gave up for a “simpler, more positive life”, an “empire”. “, a boombox, gospel music, a career break, a reputation for being volatile and dropping a scholarship to become a mother.
The judges’ assumptions: Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Jill Scott.
My guess: He’s absolutely Todrick Hall’s hero, Faith Evans. She split from the Notorious BIG in 1994 and he passed away in 1997 before she could say goodbye to him; she later sang on Diddy’s Biggie tribute song, “I’ll Be Missing You”. She also attended Fordham University on a scholarship, but dropped out after a year to have her daughter. Plus, she takes years between albums and hasn’t released a full studio LP since 2014; she got a bad rap for her peripheral involvement in the East Coast / West Coast hip-hop feud of the 1990s; she once judged a guest Empire-themed episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race; and it has roots in the gospel. In addition, the Skunk sounds a parcellike her. I have total faith that it’s Faith.
