Wanda Jackson, “Queen of Rockabilly”, has announced a new album, Bis, due August 20, produced by Joan Jett and longtime Jett producer Kenny Laguna. She also released the album’s first single, “It Keeps Right On A Hurtin ‘”.

Jett tweeted Friday about the LP, which features duets with Jett, Elle King, Pistol Annies’ Angaleena Presley and Candi Carpenter.

“This project is one of the most personal pieces I have ever published,” Jackson wrote on his Facebook page. “I hope you like it as much as I do!

Jackson, one of the early forces of rockabilly music, rose to fame with a string of hits between the late 1950s and early 1970s including “Let’s Have A Party,” “Tears Will Be the Chaser for Your Wine “,” A Woman Lives for Love “and” Fancy Satin Pillows “. When her former boyfriend Elvis Presley suggested she switch from country to rock, Jackson stepped onto the scene, flaunting what some have called a “mean” voice and becoming peers with singers like Jerry Lee Lewis.

“Anyone who cares about roots music and rock and roll revere Wanda,” singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash said in 2009 when she inducted Jackson into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Early Influence category, “but especially every young woman I know, musician or otherwise, worships her as the first as the prototype, the first female rockstar, as she so modestly recognizes herself.”

Two years ago, Jackson, now 83, retired from touring, citing health concerns. The singer suffered a stroke in 2018. “Singing, having fun and traveling were the things I loved the most in the world,” she said. Rolling stone in 2019. “So I feel lucky to have been on tour for sixty years and been everywhere I care to be. I have fans all over the world and I’m still in good enough health to be able to enjoy these things. But I felt the time had come to go ahead and make this announcement. I will always do all the special things I can, if called. “

One of those special things was this collaboration with Jett, which has been in the works for a few years. “His [the] This is the first time in a long time that I’ve written songs, “Jackson continued.” I’ve never written with other people, so it was a new experience, but I really see the benefit of it. make. It went well.”
