At first, Olivia Rodrigo’s mother was not sold on her daughter’s single.
Thursday (May 20), High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star spoke to Apple Music’s First Listen to promote their debut album, Sour.
âI’ve never actually said this in an interview before, but I was thinking about it the other day, and it’s so funny,â she teased. âWhen I first played ‘Driver’s License’ for my mom, she said, ‘The bridge is really weird. It’s too much; it doesn’t go with the rest of the song. ”
Although she didn’t get her mother’s stamp of approval, she released the version that featured the “really weird” bridge.
âLooking back, I’m glad I didn’t take this to heart, but she’s very honest,â she added. “But, I mean, obviously she’s my mom and would support me in anything I did, but I just thought that was a fun little anecdote.”
Rodrigo has revealed that her mom is the first person she plays all of her new music for. She said her mother’s taste for music inspired hers.
âHer favorite music is punk and metal music and really hard and gritty stuff, so she’s always been the one who instilled that in me, ‘I don’t care about the technical details if that makes you feel something, then this is good music. ‘If my mom doesn’t like it, I know it’s not the music that makes you feel, âshe concluded.
Rodrigo’s new record features many other fan favorite songs, however, there is one track that garnered a lot of attention and ended up trending on Twitter. Fans believed “Traitor” was about her co-star and ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett, who ended up trending so much because of the breakup anthem.
